Farewell Google Reader-My 2 Picks for Web Alternatives

bye google_reader

This is just a friendly reminder on July 1st Google Reader will no longer be updating your favorite blogs’ RSS feeds. I’ve already made a switch in readers but in case you are waiting till the last moment I decided to help you out :D.

I did a test drive on a few RSS Readers and these are my favorite alternatives to the trusty Google Reader.

First you must export your subscriptions from your Google Reader! Mashable has a great and easy how to for this HERE.

Google Reader Alternatives For Web

The Old Reader

If you really really want to keep the format of your Google Reader literally nothing beats The Old Reader for me. I actually think it is exactly the same interface! The belowimage is what my subscriptions from Google Reader look like in The Old Reader-pretty darn similar, no?

I also have to say The Old Reader is by far the easiest transfer. I subscribe to over 200 blogs ( I know! I like them all though!) and each category whether Ethical Shopping or Personal Style or Science has its own folder in Google Reader, these files transfer exactly to The Old Reader, no need to re-organize which is a HUGE bonus.

Lastly, if you really love to not leave a page while you’re browsing your favorite blogs then I would highly recommend The Old Reader to you since similar to Google Reader you can read full posts (as long as the site allows this) right in The Old Reader account.

Bloglovin’

Bloglovin’ is my personal choice of Reader at the moment. I personally enjoy going to the source of the content and reading content the way the writer intended to present it. I like to see people’s actual page especially since I know how much effort and thought is put into it and Bloglovin’ really encourages that.

There are some drawbacks to the actual transfer process in Bloglovin’ because unlike The Old Reader, bloglovin does not maintain your subscription folders at all, so you will have to reorganize your subscriptions. While I know it’s a pain it was actually a good exercise for me because I got to vet my subscriptions.

You can read more about how I use bloglovin’ right HERE.

There are quite a few great Apps for RSS readers for IPads, IPhones and Android users, but for me it was more important to share readers that work for your actual computer since that’s where I do most of my reading. If you think The Old Reader or Bloglovin’ is not what you’re looking for here is a great article on a list of more alternatives. Good luck friends! And thank you Google Reader for all the good times :D!

I’ve been reminding my readers for a while about GR being discontinued. Hoping that many of them made the switch! I’m using Bloglovin’ myself and I’ve got you on there 🙂
