Guest Post: Inspiration at the Martin Luther King Monument

Katy Rose of Modly Chic is an incredible blogger that has really built an amazing community in Fashion/Beauty Friend Friday. She is a stellar writer and just a pleasure to be around 🙂 . I’m so thrilled that she is here and helping me out on my little siesta.

Now friends,  I give you Katy Rose and the inspiration she found at the Martin Luther King Monument in Washington, D.C…

While the Lincoln memorial is certainly my favorite by far, the new Martin Luther King Jr. memorial was the most inspirational. You walk through what looks like a mountain range split in two to a view that encompasses the Jefferson memorial across the water and a large rock formation with Martin Luther King carved into the side. He looks large and imposing, which was actually a major complaint of some people, but to me he looked like a force to be reckoned with.

But even more inspiring than the gorgeous view and carving with the MLK quotes that surrounded the area. Each one had the power to tug at the heart and spur you on to love for your fellow man. As I moved among the crowds of people, many of which were elders who had no doubt experienced some of these events first hand, I was moved by the way we all almost nodded our heads in silent agreement. In speech after speech, MLK called people to action. He demanded that all human beings be respected and their dignity acknowledged. He looked forward to a day when race would no longer separate people. When we could all live as one. It was moving and inspiring.

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”

“I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.”

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
